Your skin barrier is made of tightly packed skin cells (corneocytes) surrounded by lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids). Think of it like a brick wall: the cells are the bricks, and the lipids are the mortar.
The ingredients in your NK Beauty products support this structure on a biochemical level. Here’s how — in science and in plain English.

Aloe Vera — Polysaccharides, Glycoproteins & AntiInflammatory Compounds

Understanding the benefits of skin care can be challenging. We often check the labels of our favourite brands, but how can we be sure they work for us? Let NK Beauty break down the key ingredients in their new product line and explain what each one does.

Argan

Argan oil comes from the thorny Argania spinosa tree, native to Morocco, where it adapts to barren, hot land. This oil, extracted from the fruit kernels, is used in food, haircare, and cosmetics.

This ingredient offers numerous cosmetic benefits! It is rich in fatty acids that provide deep moisture and contains antioxidants that protect against free radicals. While free radicals are not inherently harmful, their accumulation can lead to cellular damage, potentially contributing to the development of conditions such as cancer and heart disease. Therefore, having a defence against them is always beneficial.

Discover the incredible benefits of antioxidants found in Argan oil! Rich in powerful polyphenols, Argan oil not only shields your skin from harmful sun damage but also significantly diminishes visible signs of ageing while improving your skin’s texture and elasticity. With plenty of vitamin E, your skin will feel nourished and rejuvenated. Embrace a youthful glow with the natural magic of Argan!

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera is a powerful ingredient that helps relieve dry skin, soothes irritation, and reduces redness. Aloe Vera can heal inflammation while keeping your skin hydrated and soft. It also helps lessen the appearance of scars and dark spots. This amazing plant boosts collagen and elastin production, which can reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Enjoy the natural benefits of Aloe Vera for healthier, youthful-looking skin.

Seaweed

Seaweed is an extraordinary powerhouse of polyphenols and iodine. This remarkable marine plant not only effectively combats cellulite but also helps to reverse minor sun damage. By incorporating seaweed into your skincare routine, you can significantly enhance your skin’s elasticity, achieving a revitalised and youthful glow. It promotes tissue regeneration and boosts microcirculation, aiding in reducing fine lines and pigmentation. The result? Plumper, more youthful-looking skin that radiates vitality and health!

Fulvic Acid

For thousands of years, Fulvic Acid has been revered not only as a natural food and plant source but also as a transformative supplement for over six decades. To truly understand the benefits of Fulvic Acid, it’s essential to explore beyond its basic definition. This remarkable compound is a potent fungal metabolite.

Imagine unlocking a treasure trove of health benefits that Fulvic Acid provides. It is a powerful organic electrolyte, harmonising cellular health in unparalleled ways. Consider it a super-fast Uber, effortlessly transporting minerals and essential elements directly to your living cells, boosting its effectiveness many times over.

But that’s not all—Fulvic Acid is one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, an effective free radical scavenger. Its unique capacity to interact with both negatively and positively charged unpaired electrons effectively neutralises harmful free radicals, protecting your body from oxidative stress.

Fulvic Acid excels at complexing and removing toxic metals and unwanted minerals from your system, promoting overall wellness.

Athletes and bodybuilders alike are turning to Fulvic Acid to ignite their metabolism. It’s astonishing capability to deliver oxygen directly to muscle cells not only enhances performance but also aids in reducing the buildup of lactic acid and carbon dioxide, ensuring you feel your best during every workout.

Incorporate Fulvic Acid into your routine, and witness a remarkable transformation in your health, energy, and vitality!

In conclusion, NK Beauty masterfully blends these potent ingredients to offer an abundance of skincare benefits, empowering you to achieve radiant, youthful-looking skin that exudes vitality and confidence. Just a small amount is all you need to transform your skin; it effortlessly leaves your face feeling luxuriously hydrated and deeply nourished. Experience the difference and unlock your skin’s true potential.

Skin is the largest organ in your body.

It has 3 layers the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis here is a brief overview:

Epidermis

The epidermis comprises multiple layers and cells, primarily functioning to safeguard the skin by preventing bacteria, parasites, fungi and germs from infiltrating the bloodstream. Additionally, it provides protection against environmental elements, such as precipitation and sunlight.

The epidermis also contributes to skin hydration and influences skin colour through the production of melanin.

Fun fact the epidermis constantly makes new skin cells – Stratum basal.

What conditions and disorders impact the health of the epidermis?

Acne

Rosacea

Dandruff

Eczema

Infection

Dermis

The dermis, which serves as the intermediate layer situated directly beneath the epidermis, consists of two primary layers: the reticular dermis and the papillary dermis. The reticular dermis constitutes the lower layer and is characterised by a substantial presence of blood vessels, hair follicles, lymphatics, nerves, and fat cells. In contrast, the papillary dermis is the upper layer of the dermis. It is thinner than the reticular dermis and contains collagen fibres, immune cells that combat bacterial infections, as well as blood vessels and nerve fibres. Collectively, these structures function synergistically akin to a nut and bolt.

The dermis supports the epidermis by providing strength, while blood vessels facilitate the delivery of nutrients to the epidermis. The dermis also plays a role in regulating sweat and in sensing hot and cold. Additionally, the sebaceous glands within the dermis secrete oil (sebum), which helps keep the skin and hair hydrated and also adds shine.

Conditions and disorders that affect the dermis:

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

Hives

Tumours

Hypodermis

The hypodermis is the bottom and deepest layer of skin in your body. It serves many vital functions, including storing energy, connecting the dermis layer of your skin to your muscles and bones, insulating your body, and protecting it from injury. As you age, the hypodermis diminishes in size, causing your skin to sag.

The hypodermis provides insulation through a layer of fat, which helps to retain body heat and maintain temperature. Additionally, it serves as a shock absorber, protecting bones and muscles. The hypodermis is home to larger blood vessels and nerves that nourish the dermis, providing nutrients and sensory input to the skin.

Your skin cells regenerate approximately every 28 to 42 days, though this process slows down with age.

The skin is wonderfully complex, and what we’ve shared here is just a glimpse into the fascinating functions it carries out. The key takeaway is that we should genuinely support our body and skin by being mindful of what we put into it, how our environment affects it, and how we care for any injuries it might sustain.

A few ways to care for your skin include:

Drink at least eight glasses of water each day

Try using a gentle, fragrance-free soap for your skin.

When bathing, opt for lukewarm water, as hot water can dry your skin.

After washing, gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing it.

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF to keep your skin protected!

Regular exfoliation can help maintain healthy and resilient skin by promoting cell turnover and removing dead skin cells.

Properly treat your wounds to prevent infections.

After showering, prepare your face for makeup with a daytime moisturizer and eye cream. Next use a concealer to cover imperfections and wake up your eyes. We suggest a treatment concealer that conceals and brightens. Incorporate these 2 in 1 formulas into your morning to save time. Hint: Be sure to choose the proper shade and formula. Apply it sparingly. Heavy concealer in the wrong shade looks cakey, making eyes appear older. Choose a shade just a bit lighter than your foundation.

Next apply a primer. Try Chantal Lacroix La Parfaite base primer for a super-light, perfecting veil that will smooth and enhance your complexion in an instant, reducing the look of pores, fine lines and signs of fatigue. This is more than an essential step before applying foundation to ensure it looks flawless and lasts all day. This remarkable formula also offers your skin instant comfort and well-being. And, comfortable skin is pretty skin!

Now it’s time to apply foundation. Pour a small amount onto the top of your hand and then apply it with your fingertips, blending well from the center outerwards, over forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. A sweep of rosy blush on the apple of your cheeks adds a healthy, natural glow. If you like, you can substitute bronzer for blush for a more sophisticated look.

BRIGHT EYES IN A FLASH!

For daytime, the rule of thumb is keep it simple, keep it fresh. A light shadow, in ivory or pale shade of color, opens your eyes. Just a touch of highlighter under your brow bone will offer a mini lift to your eyes. Add a stroke of liner, using a forgiving soft-tipped pencil in brown or bronze. Next curl your lashes. This immediately will give you a more youthful, wide-eyed look. Open the curler and position your upper lashes inside. Slowly close the curler. Your eyelashes should fan out evenly across the upper bar. If you feel pinching, readjust the curler. Hold the curler closed for a count of ten. Repeat for other eye. Apply mascara. For days when you are looking a little tired, use a volumizing mascara, paying special attention to the outer corner of your upper lashes. Again, this lifts and opens your eyes.

You’ve heard of the Christmas Creep, but what about the Spending Sprawl? Black Friday used to be one day, and now—somehow—it’s stretched out comfortably across the calendar and turned into Cyber Week

I’m tired. You’re tired. My stomach is full and my bank account is… drained, sufficiently. So here’s something that should feel as refreshing as a raw vegetable right about now: Ten expert beauty tips that won’t cost you anything at all. That’s right, they’re completely free, extremely effective, and did I mention they’re free? I’ll be making my way down this list as I wait for my online purchases to arrive.

The Setting Mist

People, this sounds crazy, I know, but please exercise some trust here. Cleanse and moisturize, business as usual. Then apply your face makeup. Then get in the shower. The steam will blend your concealer, make it look more natural, and set it to help it last longer. It’s kind of like baking, except without all the extra product. Lightly pat anything that needs more blending when you get out, et voilà.

The Steam Room

Hot water vapor! It’s the necessary, included-in-your-utilities amenity that keeps on giving. If you have curly hair, it can help hydrate and give bounce to your curls. Run the shower turned all the way hot—don’t worry, you’re not getting into it, you’re just going to hang out on the toilet in its general vicinity. To take it to the next level, make it a deep conditioning treatment using a hair mask and a shower cap. Make a mental note next time you stay in a hotel to steal the shower cap—also take the sewing kit. And the slippers. You live in a spa now!

Bonus tip: This works the opposite way on clothes, conveniently. Hang wrinkled clothes in the bathroom while you take a hot shower to smooth out lines.

The Clear Solution

It’s the cute ones that hurt you the most. Well, maybe not hurt—but probably itch, and definitely turn your skin a weird green-blue color. Coating the back of cheap earrings and rings with clear nail polish creates a shellacked barrier between the metal and your skin, so you can go on wearing them. You really can’t tell at all, and it works.

The Lip Scrub

Did your toothbrush come in a multi-pack? You could save the extras for hypothetical overnight guests, or you could break into them now for a very important reason: You. Apply a little bit of balm, and make light circles on your lips to gently exfoliate. Put on more balm, wait five minutes for it to absorb, and you’ll have the perfect canvas for matte lipstick. No rough bits to be found.

Bonus tip: Grab another toothbrush and make it your hair spare! Spray with a little Elnett to brush up eyebrows, tame flyaways, and style your edges.

The Close Shave

The jury’s still out on whether hot water or cold water is better for shaving. What’s known for sure is that hot water dehydrates skin. Running a sharp razor along your face (or other body parts) daily can already lead to irritation, so minimize it by shaving with cold water. Less irritation equals fewer shaving bumps, and you’re less likely to get ingrown hairs with skin that’s not as dehydrated.

The Bathroom Break Blotter

What’s in a blotting paper? A blotting paper by any other name would blot as well. Case in point: The toilet seat covers in your office bathroom. Thin like a blotting paper, absorbent like a blotting paper, available for free in your place of employment. Also, probably, every other place you would need to be more matte in a pinch. If a toilet seat cover isn’t available, you can peel apart a tissue (you need a thin layer to properly blot without absorbing too much) or use a brown napkin like they have at Starbucks.

The Sharp Traveler

Some bad news: Everything ends eventually. Cyber week sales, the Netflix series you’ve been binge watching, even this here story (but not quite yet). Your favorite makeup pencils will too—eventually reduced to two-inch nubs that end up getting lost in your repurposed candle jar. Give them a second life by designating those as your travel pencils, and keep them all together in a coin purse in lieu of carrying around a full makeup bag. You’ve basically rewarded yourself with the gift of travel-sized versions of your makeup favorites.

The Ice Cube

No pun here—this is just an ice cube. Run an ice cube all over your face after a night out. Soothes redness, depuffs, and costs literally zero dollars.

Treating yourself can always be a struggle…Follow these simple hacks to love yourself again. Heres a list of self-care you can do a home with hardly any cost at all.

In light of recent events regarding the coronavirus (a.k.a., COVID-19), many of you are at home and adjusting to your new routine, which includes social distancing, self-quarantine, and possibly working from home. We’re all looking for distractions or projects to occupy our time and mind, and to pump up our spirits. One great way to do that is to turn your attention to a little beauty self-care.

As Reviewed’s resident beauty expert, I spend a lot of time trying new products, organizing my stash, and looking for new, fun ways I can enhance my routine. To help you do the same, I put together a list of beauty products and projects—many of which don’t require you to spend much, if anything at all—that you can try for yourself. Because even in tough times, it helps to do something that makes you look and feel better.

Create a personalized face mask

If you’ve spent the bulk of your isolation time in the kitchen cheffing up meals or showering your family with baked goods, we’ve got the perfect beauty task for you. There are plenty of recipes for easy DIY facials available online—whether they do what they claim or not, there’s no harm in zoning out with a blend of honey, oats, and avocado on your face. Search for recipes using whatever ingredients you have lying around and you’re bound to find some hits.

Not much for experimentation? You can always buy a sheet mask to hydrate your skin or snag a clay mask to “detoxify” it. The much-loved Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask comes as a powder and requires you to mix it with water or apple cider vinegar before spreading it over your face, so you still get that hands-on experience.

Make a scrub for your face, lips, and body

While you’re in the kitchen making a face mask, why not whip up a scrub, too? The key to this spa-like treatment is creating one that’s gentle, lest you damage your skin. It’s as simple as adding ingredients you have at home, like granulated sugar or coffee grounds, to a liquid or creamy base like oil or avocado. Use the scrub to slough dead skin off of your lips, face, and body in the shower and follow up with a moisturizer to replenish the skin barrier.

Clean your makeup brushes

If you can’t remember the last time you washed your makeup brushes, (spoiler) it’s been too long. First off, the bristles hold onto your foundation or eyeshadow and potentially affect the look you’re going for when you use them, but also they can collect bacteria, which you’re then transferring to your face every time you use them.

Use a bar of gentle soap, like the Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented Beauty Bar Soap, and run the brushes over it under water—you’ll see the makeup’s pigment run off onto the soap bar. When it runs clean, that’s how you know you’re done sudsing. Some people also use their facial cleanser to clean brushes in a pinch, and there are tons of hacks for makeup brush cleansers on the internet using household ingredients. To help the process along, you can use your cleanser of choice to coat the brushes and rub them against a cleansing mat, like the popular Sigma one, that has grooves that create friction to break up the makeup in the brush. You can also find a mitt at Ulta that works similarly and is handheld and less expensive.

No matter your method, you’ll want to thoroughly rinse out your cleanser then lay your brushes flat or maneuver them to hang upside down so that the water doesn’t run toward the barrel, causing water to get trapped at the base of the bristles or warp the handle.

Oil train your hair

Did you know that you can “train” your hair to become less oily? The more you wash your hair and remove the oil from it, the more your scalp produces oil to overcompensate for the loss, just like your facial skin. If you’re shampooing every day yet notice scalp greasiness before your next shower, you’re among the many people who over-wash their hair, especially if you also notice that your ends feel dry and overstyled at the same time. There’s no better time than right now when you don’t have to go out in public, to get yourself down to the one to two washes per week recommended for healthy hair from root to tip.

Not sure where to start? Boston-based hair stylist Graziella Meola told us to gradually space out your washes over a couple of weeks—from every day to every other day, to every third day—and substitute with dry shampoo on the off days, or by rinsing with water and putting conditioner on the ends of your hair if you simply must “wash” your hair every day.

Deep condition your hair

Many people have (unofficially) reported to me that their hair is feeling dry and snarly from throwing it up in buns everyday in lieu of their usual styling routines. In some cases, it’s also a matter of unfortunate timing with now having to postpone a long-needed haircut. A hair mask can’t repair your dead ends, but it can give your hair a needed boost of hydration. If you’re looking to invest in one, try the fan-favorite Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask, which claims to replenish moisture and protect against future damage. If you want to save some cash, you can make your own using ingredient combinations like eggs and mayonnaise, banana and avocado, or yogurt and honey, according to blog recipes.

Declutter your makeup collection

You may be taking inventory of any non-necessities cluttering up your space. Unlike clothes, books, or other home purging projects you may consider tackling, makeup doesn’t take up too much space, so it may not be top of mind when you’re sifting through belongings. If you sit down at your vanity, though, you’ll likely find at least one product you haven’t touched in awhile, or ones that are expired.

Most cosmetics have a small graphic depicting an open jar on the packaging with a number inside that indicates its shelf life in months. Go through your collection and toss anything that sits unused or you’re certain you bought longer ago than this suggested expiration. If you have unopened products that you don’t see yourself using, consider donating them to an organization like Project Beauty Share, which gives products to non-profit organizations “serving women and families overcoming abuse, addiction, homelessness and poverty to help restore hope and dignity in their lives.”

Try self-tanning

You’re likely not having many face-to-face interactions these days and for those that happen over a video chat, your virtual appearance does not need to be top-notch. But if you’re someone who feels their best with the glow of a tan, don’t let the current news cycle discourage you from it. Or if you’re someone who wants to finally try self-tanning but you’ve always been afraid of it, now is the time to experiment.

Give yourself a manicure or pedicure

You don’t have to be a professional nail technician to groom your fingers and toes—just some basic tools that you may already have at home, like a nail file and clippers. To keep it simple, clip the tips of your nails and file down any sharp edges to avoid snags in your clothes or scratches on your skin. Then, if you have one, paint a clear coat on your nails to make them look shiny and healthy. Repeat this process on your toes.

If you want to try your hand at a spa-like nail treatment, place your fingertips in a warm bowl of water to soften the skin, then clean up your cuticles using a cuticle pusher. From there, trim your tips with a clipper, shape the edges with a file, and buff out the tops of the nails with a nail buffer or an old, worn-down file that’s not too rough. Once you’ve completed these steps, wash your hands and proceed with a clear coat or a colorful polish that flashes your work. For your feet, you can do the same process but use a foot spa—or, in a pinch, a bucket filled with warm water—to prep your feet.

Living in the tropics can be really taxing because we have to go that extra mile to make sure our skin is healthy. Lips being exposed to the environment at all times are the first to get affected.

Dry summers are especially challenging because they’re topped by not just with scorching sunlight, but dry air can leave the lips brutally chapped. Even something as small as sore lips can cause significant discomfort with the possibility of affecting your entire day and mood. Here are some easy hacks that will help you keep your lips soft and supple all day, every day.

Moisturise Your Lips

Using a good lip balm is where you can start. There are a lot of benefits of using lip balm. Moreover, they’re small and handy and can be applied as many times a day as you like. A good fruit lip balm can work wonders in the summer. Remember to use it right after you shower to lock in the moisture, before you sleep, and throughout the day. Strawberries are particularly great for skin as they’re rich in Vitamin C.

Wear A Moisturising Lipstick

Avoid lipsticks with paraben. If possible, opt for an organic one made with natural ingredients. If that’s not your thing, settle for one with moisturising elements. Glossy or creamy ones are always better than matte because they can lubricate the skin. Always, always remember to use a fruit lip balm or natural lip balm before applying your lipstick, this will help retain the moisture in your lips and won’t let the lipstick dry your skin out.

Don’t Lick Your Lips

Yes, it might sound like using your saliva to wet your lips will moisturise them, but it won’t. It will actually make it worse and dry your lips out even more. Instead, every time you feel like licking your lips, remember to use a flavoured lip balm enough times until it becomes second nature.

Scrub With A Toothbrush

Yep, we’re not kidding! Just like the skin on the rest of your body, your lips also have a layer of dead skin. Gently scrub with your toothbrush, so the bristles act as exfoliators. This will help get rid of the flakiness leaving your lips soft and supple. When you scrub your body, you apply a hydrating moisturiser to protect it from being exposed to the environment. Similarly, a strawberry flavoured lip balm after scrubbing will help keep your lips soft and healthy. Pouting for selfies with your BFFs is going to be a cakewalk!

D-I-Y Lip Mask

If you don’t know how to choose lip balm, the easiest way to make one is by mixing one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply well on the lips and leave for 20 minutes. After which you should rinse thoroughly so as not to leave behind any stickiness. Do this first thing in the morning to have fabulous lips all day long.

Drink Water

Water is an underrated asset when it comes to skincare. Drink plenty of water every day to build your immune system and keep your lips from getting chapped. Very soon you’ll notice a visible change, and you won’t need products as often, though it’s always good to keep a lip balm handy.

Now that you have all the hacks handy, what are you waiting for? Go get those perfect pouty lips all you want!

Makeup can sometimes be a little intimidating, especially when you are trying new things. Let’s face it, the risk is real.

Buying new products you may or may not like, wondering what other people will think of your new look, etc. One of the biggest questions in makeup is colour! Specifically, graduating from a more nude, conservative look — to a more bold, bright and colourful look. You don’t have to take a leap of faith though! We asked some of our professional clients for some tips on experimenting with colour.

Tips For Experimenting With Colours

1/11) For bright lips, try a bright gloss instead of a bright opaque coloured lip stick. For people not used to colour on the lips, gloss is usually a little less intimidating. For eyes, try a simple wash of one colour over the lids rather than trying to incorporate multiple colours.

2/11) Lipsticks are a great way to experiment with colour. They add a small pop to a natural look without committing to a full day’s wear. If you need to change it, just blot it off. Bright eyeliners are also a great pop. Super small and noncommittal. It won’t overtake your entire look or make you look clownish.

3/11) If you’re new to using colour in your makeup, start with colours you already lean towards in your wardrobe. Jewel tones are also a great way to transition from neutrals adding a subtle, sexy and colourful edge to your makeup.

4/11) Experimenting with colour need not be intimidating. Find clever ways to incorporate fall shade trends to your makeup. My clients love when I add a smudge of liner to lower lashes or a wash of eyeshadow to the tear duct in an on-trend shade. Most women love to be on trend without being over the top. If lipstick is more your thing why not try a new colour but stick to your favorite finish? It’s adding something new without changing up the game completely. Since most makeup retailers offer makeup applications with purchase, stop in and try before you buy. That takes the fear out of cosmetics all together.

5/11) First and foremost it’s makeup, if you don’t like how it looks you can always take it off! Fall is a great transition season to still use those bronzy colours but to incorporate more depth to them. Try a brown smoky eye or try pairing a natural eye with a dark bold lipstick in a wine colour.

6/11) Start light and build the colour up. A lot of times people want to throw the colour they see in the palette or eyeshadow straight on to the eye lid and try to have the same intensity that they see. However, those colours may not look good with your skin tone. If you start light and build the intensity you will see a good shade of green, for instance, that works for your complexion.

7/11) I love experimenting with colour! If we’re talking about eyes, more often than not I pair my pop of colour with a neutral matte shade and a black eye liner. This combo makes almost any colour instantly wearable and less scary! For instance, if I’m going wild with a bold blue on my lid, I’ll blend it out with a taupe or medium brown shade to tone it down a notch. If I want to create a smokier effect, I’ll add a matte black shadow in the “outer v” areas. As soon as I add my favorite black eye liner, I’m good to go.

8/11) I would say one of the most important things to consider that hasn’t already been mentioned would be to pick one feature to play with colour with, and then go nude/neutral on the others, to avoid potentially looking clownish. So – if you are doing a brighter eye, do a softer cheek and light or nude lip. If it’s a bright lip, softer cheek and browns/grays/tans on the eyes – you get the picture! –

9/11) Try to use one colour per brush, so it won’t end up looking dirty. And use a clean brush for blending.

10/11) I would say, make sure to keep it tight, don’t go crazy outside of the crease, not until you know what you are doing. Also, start with the eye makeup first, so you don’t freak out from the colourful fallout. And don’t think that everything has to match – pink shadow / pink lips / pink dress / pink shoes. Oh and never experiment when you are in a rush to go! The universe will make sure to get you for being too brave.

11/11) My pro tip is to add colour on eye lid. It gives an easy application and a peak of colour. Just over the ball of your eye. Blending into a transition colour. If you’re wanting to be a tad more daring, blending a colour through the crease with a large blending brush will still give you a pop of colour.

But even if you’ve been wearing eyeshadow and foundation for decades, there are some next-level tricks out there that will leave you asking yourself, “How did I not know this?!” So if you’re looking to learn a few smart beauty tips that will save you time and money — all while looking more glam than ever! — you’re in the right spot.

From tried-and-true beauty insider secrets to the makeup techniques celebs rely on (we see you, highlighting and contouring), we’ve rounded up the best tips and tricks recommended by makeup pros and makeup junkies alike. Whether you’re looking to fix common makeup problems like creasing, smudging, or fading, or you just want to change up your look, here are the best makeup hacks that you need to try ASAP.

Powder your lashes.

The key to fluffier and fuller lashes? A little translucent powder. After your first coat of mascara, dust your lashes with a gentle coat of loose powder — this will add volume to your eyelashes by making them look thicker. Add a second coat of mascara to cover the dustiness, and you’ll see the difference for yourself.

Apply concealer in a triangle.

Instead of dotting concealer under your eyes, apply in un upside down triangle to brighten any dark circles and draw attention up to your pupils.

Learn how to apply eyeliner to complement your eye shape.

Everyone’s eyes are different — so that means everyone’s eyeliner should be drawn on a little bit differently, too. First, figure out your eye shape (hooded eyes, downturned eyes, monolid eyes, or round eyes), then learn the best eyeliner to use and the right way to apply it to make your eyes stand out.

Take your time putting on false eyelashes…

When applying fake eyelashes, don’t rush to apply them after adding the glue. “Wait until lash glue has dried for about 30 to 40 seconds before applying falsies to keep the strip from sliding around and a faster dry-time on lids,”

Refresh your clumpy mascara.

If your favorite tube of mascara is starting to get a little clumpy, add a few drops of saline solution and swirl your brush around — it will add moisture to the mascara’s formula and extend its shelf life.

Don’t line your entire eye with dark liner.

After you finish applying any kind of eyeliner to your upper lashline, stop there or else your eyes will look smaller. “Avoid rimming your entire eyes in a dark color, unless you’re going for a full-blown smoky eye,” “Covering anything in a dark color is slimming, so you want to keep dark colors on the top and outer corners of the eyes to lift and accentuate.”

Apply nude or white liner to your waterline to widen eyes.

While dark liner on your waterline will close eyes in, white eyeliner has the opposite effect. “Find a liner that is a few shades lighter than your skin tone. Apply the liner to your bottom waterline,” “This will give the illusion of bigger, brighter eyes.”

Get the last drops out of your liquid makeup.

When your liquid makeup is “empty,” here’s a secret: It’s not really empty. There’s bound to be some concealer, foundation, or liquid highlighter in the bottle that you just can’t squeeze out on your own.

Curl eyelashes more than once.

If you’re looking for long, full lashes, don’t make the common mistake of just pressing down once with your eyelash curler.
“When curling eyelashes, pulse a few times up the whole length of your lashes for the most natural-looking curl,”

Brush your brows into place.

If you’re out of brow gel, try this DIY method to keep even the most unruly brows in place. “Apply a small amount of hair gel or hairspray on to a clean spoolie or toothbrush and brush your brows into place.

Thanks to trends like “Instagram face” and celebrities like Kylie Jenner, plump lips are still the beauty look du jour.

There’s something about defined, magnified lips that manages to pull an entire look together. And while dangerous cupping tutorials and injection stories have certainly made the rounds on the internet, there’s a 100 percent safe way to create the look up plump lips: With makeup.

It’s easy to create the appearance of larger lips, you’ll just need lip liner, a lip color, concealer, and highlight. The key to this look is contrast and definition, making dark areas darker and lighter areas even lighter, without compromising the sharp, clean lines that separate your lips from the rest of your skin. Don’t worry, because it’s way easier than it.

Step One: Outline Your Lips With a Skin Tone Lip Liner

The first step is all about creating a crisp outline to frame your lips, using a smooth lip pencil. “Use a shade that’s just deeper than the shade of your lips,” Matin says. “I’m filling in the contours of the lips, not all the way around, coloring in the outsides by basically shading it. I’m leaving the inside almost clean.” You may choose to slightly exceed the line where your lips meet your skin in order to create the appearance of larger lips.

Step Two: Fill in Your Lips With a Light Lip Color

Just like we accentuated the darker outline of the lips in step one, now we’ll be accentuating the lighter center of the lips (where your top and bottom lips meet). “The lighter the color lipstick you use, the plumper the lip look. Darker lipsticks make your lips look smaller, while lighter lipsticks make them poutier.” You can use a lip stain, lipstick, a lip tint, or a lip crayon for this step, whichever formula works best for you.

Step Three: Apply Lip Gloss to the Center of Your Lips

Focusing on the center line where top and bottom lips meet, apply a high-shine lip gloss. Opt for a shade that’s two or three shades lighter than the lip liner you chose. This contrast helps create the optical illusion of plump lips.

Step Four: Define Your Outer Lip Line With Concealer

“Just use a touch of [concealer] in the corner of the lips to really sharpen the corners,” Matin says. Essentially, you’re tracing outside of the line you created with lip liner in step one using concealer to create even more contrast and definition—the key to a 3-D, pouty lip. As a finishing touch, you can also add a dusting of highlight to the Cupid’s bow.
