You’ve heard of the Christmas Creep, but what about the Spending Sprawl? Black Friday used to be one day, and now—somehow—it’s stretched out comfortably across the calendar and turned into Cyber Week

I’m tired. You’re tired. My stomach is full and my bank account is… drained, sufficiently. So here’s something that should feel as refreshing as a raw vegetable right about now: Ten expert beauty tips that won’t cost you anything at all. That’s right, they’re completely free, extremely effective, and did I mention they’re free? I’ll be making my way down this list as I wait for my online purchases to arrive.

The Setting Mist

People, this sounds crazy, I know, but please exercise some trust here. Cleanse and moisturize, business as usual. Then apply your face makeup. Then get in the shower. The steam will blend your concealer, make it look more natural, and set it to help it last longer. It’s kind of like baking, except without all the extra product. Lightly pat anything that needs more blending when you get out, et voilà.

The Steam Room

Hot water vapor! It’s the necessary, included-in-your-utilities amenity that keeps on giving. If you have curly hair, it can help hydrate and give bounce to your curls. Run the shower turned all the way hot—don’t worry, you’re not getting into it, you’re just going to hang out on the toilet in its general vicinity. To take it to the next level, make it a deep conditioning treatment using a hair mask and a shower cap. Make a mental note next time you stay in a hotel to steal the shower cap—also take the sewing kit. And the slippers. You live in a spa now!

Bonus tip: This works the opposite way on clothes, conveniently. Hang wrinkled clothes in the bathroom while you take a hot shower to smooth out lines.

The Clear Solution

It’s the cute ones that hurt you the most. Well, maybe not hurt—but probably itch, and definitely turn your skin a weird green-blue color. Coating the back of cheap earrings and rings with clear nail polish creates a shellacked barrier between the metal and your skin, so you can go on wearing them. You really can’t tell at all, and it works.

The Lip Scrub

Did your toothbrush come in a multi-pack? You could save the extras for hypothetical overnight guests, or you could break into them now for a very important reason: You. Apply a little bit of balm, and make light circles on your lips to gently exfoliate. Put on more balm, wait five minutes for it to absorb, and you’ll have the perfect canvas for matte lipstick. No rough bits to be found.

Bonus tip: Grab another toothbrush and make it your hair spare! Spray with a little Elnett to brush up eyebrows, tame flyaways, and style your edges.

The Close Shave

The jury’s still out on whether hot water or cold water is better for shaving. What’s known for sure is that hot water dehydrates skin. Running a sharp razor along your face (or other body parts) daily can already lead to irritation, so minimize it by shaving with cold water. Less irritation equals fewer shaving bumps, and you’re less likely to get ingrown hairs with skin that’s not as dehydrated.

The Bathroom Break Blotter

What’s in a blotting paper? A blotting paper by any other name would blot as well. Case in point: The toilet seat covers in your office bathroom. Thin like a blotting paper, absorbent like a blotting paper, available for free in your place of employment. Also, probably, every other place you would need to be more matte in a pinch. If a toilet seat cover isn’t available, you can peel apart a tissue (you need a thin layer to properly blot without absorbing too much) or use a brown napkin like they have at Starbucks.

The Sharp Traveler

Some bad news: Everything ends eventually. Cyber week sales, the Netflix series you’ve been binge watching, even this here story (but not quite yet). Your favorite makeup pencils will too—eventually reduced to two-inch nubs that end up getting lost in your repurposed candle jar. Give them a second life by designating those as your travel pencils, and keep them all together in a coin purse in lieu of carrying around a full makeup bag. You’ve basically rewarded yourself with the gift of travel-sized versions of your makeup favorites.

The Ice Cube

No pun here—this is just an ice cube. Run an ice cube all over your face after a night out. Soothes redness, depuffs, and costs literally zero dollars.

Never-ending summer state of mind and sunkissed skin is a dream most of us have. But, unless you live in Miami, you will have to work hard to maintain that perfect bronze tan all year long.

Luckily, there are many options you can try and use to keep your skin perfectly tanned and glowing!

In order to maintain spotless skin and tan when you are already tanned, you could simply use cosmetic products you already have in your makeup bag to improve your look. We prepared 6 make up tips for tanned skin to help you enhance your natural beauty and that sleek skin tan.

1. Make Sure Your Skin is Hydrated and Protected

You always need to take care of your skin, no matter what time of the year it is. But, in summer, when your skin is more exposed to the sun and harmful UV rays, you need to take care of it even more. If you don’t want to speed up the inevitable aging process, don’t forget to use sunscreen each time before you go out.

2. Avoid Foundation

There is no need to apply foundation to tanned skin. If you really have to, opt for a light foundation, to let your skin breathe during those hot summer days or cold winter months. Opt for a BB or CC cream instead of a combination of a primer and heavy foundation.

3. Focus on the Cheeks

Cheeks should be one of your main focuses. There is no better way to accentuate the bronze glow of your skin than to emphasize your cheek area. The important thing is to choose the best color of a blush or a bronzer depending on your personal preference and your skin tone. Rose and coral tones of blush will give more color to your face, however, using golden bronzer to emphasize your cheeks will add a glowing touch to your makeup look.

4. Make A Statement With Your Lips

Another thing to focus on when choosing the right makeup for tanned skin is putting an accent on your lips. We don’t have anything against natural lips, but your radiant skin will appear more blooming if you put on some red, orange, or coral lipstick. Choosing earth color shades is also a good way to go. If you decide for wine red color lipstick, you need to make the rest of your look simple and natural.

5. Put an Accent on Your Eyes

There are so many ways you can experiment when it comes to your eyeshadow. When your skin is bronze, the choices are truly endless. If you want to achieve a more sexy look, try dark smoky eyes. If you are more into maintaining the natural look, emphasize your eyes with an orange eyeshadow tone, and blend it well.

6. Hello, Highlighters!

Highlighters are always welcome, don’t you think? When you are done with your makeup, apply glossy highlighter above your cheeks — on the top of your cheekbones, on the tip of your nose, and above your lips — over your cupid’s bow. And ladies, try to control yourself — don’t exaggerate!

Bonus tip: You should be aware of the fact that tanning with makeup on will not bring you results you are looking for. Makeup creates a barrier, and as a result, you will end up with an uneven tan.

Those were the tips that can help you achieve that perfect, bronzed glow and glossy, natural looking skin. With a little effort, the results will be stunning!

When it comes to ‘90s beauty trends that have made a strong comeback recently, press-on nails are at the top of our list for mani must-haves.

The easy-to-use DIY manicure staple not only saves money and time going to the salon, but it lets you customize your nail designs as often as you want.

But the one drawback to press-ons that we hear often is that they can be changed too easily — many find it hard to keep their press-on nails from popping off quickly after application. Well, that stops here, as we’re sharing five simple tips on how to make press on nails last longer.

How Do You Keep Press On Nails From Popping Off?

The key to making press-ons last like gel nails or an acrylic manicure is in the application process. Of course the quality of your adhesive is important, but there are other things you can also do to extend the life of your press-on nails.

1. Clean Your Nail Beds With the Right Product

If you have oily nail beds then you know how important it is to clean them before getting a manicure — gel, traditional or otherwise — to avoid premature chipping. Before you start your press-on set, clean your nail beds and the base of the press on nails with acetone polish remover. This will help you remove excess oil from your nail and any leftover polish or gel residue you may have on your nails from a previous manicure.

Just be careful when wiping the press-on with the remover, acetone is used to remove gel and other highly cross-linked varnishes. One light swipe inside the nail is all you need, and if you’re concerned about the quality of your press-on nails opt for non-acetone nail polish remover for this step.

2. Buff Your Nails Before Application

After you’ve fitted each nail and laid them out in front of you, take a glass nail file or a sanding block and give your natural nails a light buffing. Be gentle, the goal is just to create some texture for your nail adhesive or glue to stick to. This also helps you avoid air pockets that cause press-on nails to pop off quickly.

3. Double Glue Your Nails

You know how double cleansing your skin is beneficial to removing makeup and getting rid of impurities, dirt and pollution — this step is nothing like that in process, but it’s just as beneficial when it comes to making your press-on set last. Add a thin layer of nail glue or adhesive to your natural nail and be sure to cover it completely. Then add a drop of nail glue to the inside base of the press-on, avoiding the free edge. The glue in the press-on will naturally be drawn to the glue on your nail and they’ll grab onto each other, adding an extra layer of bonding.

Make sure you coat the nails well to avoid air bubbles as they create pockets between your nail and the press-on. If air gets into the adhesive your nails may be popping off before the end of the day — and no one wants that after all their hard work.

4. Apply Pressure for Ample Time

Simply placing the press-on nails onto your nails isn’t enough to get them to stay no matter what the packaging says. You have to apply pressure in the center of the nail for at least 10 seconds (on each nail) and pinch the sides while you do it to get the best possible nail bed fit.

5. Cure Like a Gel Manicure

We understand that some press-on sets will come already painted and designed and need no extra work once you’ve applied them. If that’s the case then you’re all done. But if your nails need to be painted then this presents another opportunity to add some staying power to your press-on nails.

After you’ve painted your nails with gel polish, cure them under a UV lamp. Cure each nail as you polish it, then cure the entire hand once you’ve completed all your nails. This will give your adhesive more hold, resulting in a press-on manicure that lasts just as long as your salon gel set. If you have a pack of pre-painted gel nails you may be able to cure those too, just check the packaging for warnings first.

When your press-ons are a week old, give them a light top coat to freshen up the color and keep them looking new.

Can You Put Gel Over Press On Nails?

Like we said above, if you’re using press-ons that need to be painted once applied it’s okay to put gel polish over them and cure them under a UV lamp. If you’re using pre-painted press-on nails, be careful as the gel could ruin your nails. Check with the brand before you cure pre-designed press-ons and if it won’t present an issue, cure away.

How Long Do Press On Nails Usually Last?

A set of press-on nails will typically last for about one week but if you follow the tips above and take care of your nails they could stay intact for two to three weeks (or until you remove them). If you want to remove press-on nails before they come off on their own, be sure to follow the proper steps like you would when removing gel nails or removing acrylic nails and follow up with hand care to keep your natural nails looking and feeling healthy.

Some of these may seem like common sense but it’s a game changer for some..

Use a primer, it helps with getting rid of your pores and will make your foundation look 10x better.

Always use a primer before applying eyeshadow, if you don’t have a primer then use concealer, it works as well. Make sure you set the primer/concealer before you start putting eyeshadow on, this will make your eyeshadow blend so so so much more flawlessly.

Learn the layout of your face and where things line up and go. Learning things like where the tail of your brow should end based off the angle from the edge of your nostril and the corner of your eye, or how eyebrows only come in as far as the outside of your nose, or finding the arch of your brow by lining a brush up off the edge of your nostril and directly through your pupil. Where to apply highlight, where to put contour (under your cheekbones/in the hollows of your cheeks) will honestly save your life. It’s the technical part to doing and applying your makeup that makes it look pulled together.

Learn what eyebrow shape goes with your face shape; just because “on fleek” eyebrows look good on Kim Kardashian doesn’t mean that you have the face shape for them also.

Know your undertone. This will make a difference in what foundation you buy. You don’t want to have a yellow undertone and be buying foundation for a pink undertone because it won’t match your skin as flawlessly and it’ll honestly just make you look artificial.

Get more pigmented eyeshadow by dampening your brush, keep in mind that it won’t blend as well if the brush is wet so make sure you have another brush to blend with that’s dry.

Learn how to contour your nose based on your nose shape, it’s not the same for all noses. Basically just learn the layout of your face, memorize that shit to the point that you’d be able to do your contouring without a mirror.

Exfoliate and moisturize your lips by scrubbing all the dead skin off with either a lip scrub or just scrubbing it off, and then put on so much chapstick that your lips practically slide when they touch because of how much chapstick you have on. Do this before bed.

Exfoliate often and make sure you have no dead skin on your face before doing your makeup.

Blend beneath your jawline. Good grief, make sure you blend down past your jawline and into your hairline, but not onto your hair.

Get rid of excess lipstick by putting a piece of paper or a tissue in between your lips and lightly closing your lips down on the paper. This will get rid of all the lipstick that’s in too far on your lips.

Get any lipstick to be matte by putting a tissue over your lipstick and then applying a translucent mattifying powder with a brush on top of the tissue where your lips are. When you move the tissue the lipstick should be matte.

Baking helps so much with setting your makeup. Baking your face will help prevent creasing on your under eyes where your concealer is and in other places that you crease as well. I highly suggest baking your face.

Don’t put foundation in the areas underneath of your eyes where you put your concealer, you’re unnecessarily layering your makeup and making it thicker and cakier there than it would be otherwise. Try to avoid putting foundation under your eyes where your concealer is, but make sure you thoroughly blend your concealer into your foundation so you can’t tell that they were done separately, if that makes sense.

Everyone loves a fresh beginning. If you wish to wake up with glowing and clean skin, then you must remove your makeup..

You’re doing your skin the absolute favor by removing the makeup at night. Napping with makeup on can cause acne, dry skin, and even wrinkles.

Leaving eye makeup on can lead to its own set of issues, including broken eyelashes, styes, eye irritations, and eye infections? This is why taking off your makeup is very important. So, here are a few tips to enable you to get flawlessly bare, makeup-free skin.

Be extra gentle with your face

We are certain you’ve come across numerous makeup-removing items in many formulations. Be it cleansing oil, micellar water, bi-phase makeup remover, or cleansing water – the choices are vast. Nonetheless, remember your skin type before buying a makeup removal product. It shouldn’t cause any unwanted skin issues whose main job was to avoid it.

Once you’ve selected the makeup removing cleanser, bring a Q-tip or cotton pad, moisten it in the makeup remover and lightly glide across the skin.

Give your eyes more attention

Eye makeup can be very hard to take off, particularly removing liquid liners or pesky mascara. Instead of washing away eye makeup rapidly, moisten the cotton pad in your makeup remover and gently pat the makeup away.

For beauty items such as liner or mascara, don’t forget to use a cleanser-soaked makeup remover pad. Hold and press it smoothly over your eyes for a few minutes. Then, gently slide the cotton pad over your closed eyelids, and your eye makeup will be instantly removed.

Remember your hairline

We realize that you’ve done a great job using your foundation, and it’s difficult to remove that masterpiece. But you need to! Since the foundation, when utilized, goes to your hairline, too, remember to rinse that spot as well.

Utilize a headband or scrunchie to wrap your hair in a sharp back style to make sure you get off every bit of makeup from your hairline. Your roots might get a little wet, but they’ll not be unfavorable.

Conclusion

In the world of elegance, taking off your makeup before going to bed is one of the most crucial rituals. Most individuals utilize makeup to improve their elegance. Nonetheless, when they have to take it off, they feel extremely lazy. Although it is not harmful, this negligence can cause serious impacts, such as tagged pores, loss of luminosity, and the appearance of spots, among others. This is why follow the above-mentioned to remove your makeup. However, while removing your makeup, always use the best quality beauty products.

Times are changing and so are a lot of things. We are in the day and era where beauty has become more inclusive and open to all. With this, there are also many out there who love to apply makeup.

The trend has changed now. Men applying makeup is a piece of common knowledge. When done right, makeup can help enhance your features. It can help in bringing out the best of your facial features. We are not just talking about foundation, liner and all, but a basic and simple application that every man can follow.

Here are some pointers for nailing the natural makeup. You can take cues from these to ace the look:

Trim the facial hair

To trim brows, moustache and beard, use a small pair of scissors and a nose or ear trimmer. A man with unruly facial hair might easily appear untidy.

Face cleaning

This means not your regular soap and a quick wash with it, but the use of face scrub. The exfoliation routine is necessary. Gently massaging the scrub on your face will help in removing dead skin and open your pores.

Apply moisturizer

Avoiding moisturizer will result in dry skin. Your face needs cream to stay refreshed and hydrated. It will also help the makeup last longer.

Next up is concealer

Apply concealer to cover up any facial blemishes and dark undereye bags. Select a colour that fits your skin tone.

Choose the right foundation

It is very important that you choose the right foundation, otherwise, your face will look brighter than it should. Use a sponge to apply an even tone. Take the time to spread it properly and for it to blend into your skin.

Use ace powder

This is the next step in your makeup routine. Use a pressed powder brush for your face. Do not forget the forehead and nose areas, as they are the oiliest parts.

Something for the lips

In case you are going for a simple and natural everyday look, then a light lip balm would be perfect. Apply a generous layer to avoid dryness.

If you’ve ever bought a manicure that lasts longer than regular nail polish, you’ve likely been faced with the gel nails vs. acrylic nails debate.

While both of these options are a great way to try out various nail trends, locking down the right style and technique for you is easier said than done.

With risks of chipped nail polish, broken nails and more, making the right selection is key for ensuring your nails go the distance. Below, we’re breaking down the differences between gel and acrylic nails, so you know what to ask for at your next manicure appointment.

What Are Gel Nails?

Before we get deep into the gel nails vs. acrylic nails discussion, let’s recap the basics of what you get with each. Gel nails are made through a three-step process, which consists of brushing a base coat, nail polish, and top coat over your natural nails.

With each coat, the nail is placed under a UV light for somewhere between 30 seconds and two minutes to cure (dry). Once cured, the layer of gel polish hardens and won’t smudge like traditional nail polish. The final result is nails that sport a glossy finish and freshly manicured look. You can use gel polish on your natural nails or on nail extensions, also called tips.

What Are Acrylic Nails?

Acrylic nails are made of a combination of liquid and powder that’s laid over your nail with a brush. Once the mixture is applied, your nails are filed and shaped to emulate the look of natural nails.

After your acrylic nails are shaped, each nail is typically painted with a regular base coat, nail polish color, and finished with a top coat. Nails are then set under a fan to dry. Acrylic can also be applied to tips or to your natural nails, though they can weaken your nails with prolonged use.

Editor’s tip: You can actually mix the two styles and get gel polish cured over your acrylic nails for the ultimate manicure that has strength and long wear.

What’s The Difference Between Gel And Acrylic Nails?

Although gel and acrylic nails can provide similar results, there are key differences with each nail style. As we mentioned, gel nails typically consist of brushing coats of polish on your natural nails and are cured with a UV lamp. The process is much faster than applying acrylic, especially because drying is instant, and the nails often look more natural. These days you can find online kits that let you get gel nails right at home. Once complete, gel nails will usually last for around 14 days without chipping. Toward the end of this period, they may start to peel or lift at the corners.

When you’re ready to remove gel nails, all you need to do is soak them off and you’re good to go. Typically, a cotton ball soaked in acetone is placed over the nail, then each nail is wrapped in aluminum foil. After 10 minutes, the gel polish is easily able to be removed. While gel nails can be prone to peeling, they are known to be more flexible than acrylic nails, although be warned that both styles run the risk of damaging your natural nails with continuous wear.

On the flip side, acrylic nails provide a hard, protective layer due to the powder and liquid hybrid mixture they’re created with. Since acrylic nails are durable, you typically don’t have to worry about your nails cracking, breaking, or lifting while you have the acrylics (you may even notice that your natural nails grow longer and faster with acrylics).

However, they’re not foolproof and if you do lot’s of work with your hands (think typing, washing dishes, working out with weights) there is the potential for them to break. Acrylic nails can also look bulky if your tech doesn’t take the time to smooth them down to look more natural. If you’re using regular nail polish over acrylic, drying time can take a while, so you may want to tune into your favorite podcast while you sit in the salon and wait. These nails are also challenging to remove without damaging your nail beds.

To keep your acrylic set intact, you’ll have to refill your nails every few weeks. And once you remove acrylic nails, you’re often left with nails that are long but weak. You’ll have to wait for the damaged nails to grow out to get your nails back in shape.

Typically, acrylic nails are removed in the salon by a nail technician, whereas gel nails can be removed at home with ease. If you try to remove either without taking proper steps, you can be left with broken and brittle claws. So if you’re wondering, which is worse for you nails between gel and acrylic, they both have the potential to damage your nails if worn continuously or removed improperly, and they both can look stunning when done well.

Makeup can sometimes be a little intimidating, especially when you are trying new things. Let’s face it, the risk is real.

buying new products you may or may not like, wondering what other people will think of your new look, etc. One of the biggest questions in makeup is colour! Specifically, graduating from a more nude, conservative look — to a more bold, bright and colourful look. You don’t have to take a leap of faith though! We asked some of our professional clients for some tips on experimenting with colour.

Tips For Experimenting With Colorus

1/11) For bright lips, try a bright gloss instead of a bright opaque coloured lip stick. For people not used to colour on the lips, gloss is usually a little less intimidating. For eyes, try a simple wash of one colour over the lids rather than trying to incorporate multiple colours.

2/11) Lipsticks are a great way to experiment with colour. They add a small pop to a natural look without committing to a full day’s wear. If you need to change it, just blot it off. Bright eyeliners are also a great pop. Super small and noncommittal. It won’t overtake your entire look or make you look clownish.

3/11) If you’re new to using colour in your makeup, start with colours you already lean towards in your wardrobe. Jewel tones are also a great way to transition from neutrals adding a subtle, sexy and colourful edge to your makeup.

4/11) Experimenting with colour need not be intimidating. Find clever ways to incorporate fall shade trends to your makeup. My clients love when I add a smudge of liner to lower lashes or a wash of eyeshadow to the tear duct in an on-trend shade. Most women love to be on trend without being over the top. If lipstick is more your thing why not try a new colour but stick to your favorite finish? It’s adding something new without changing up the game completely. Since most makeup retailers offer makeup applications with purchase, stop in and try before you buy. That takes the fear out of cosmetics all together.

5/11) First and foremost it’s makeup, if you don’t like how it looks you can always take it off! Fall is a great transition season to still use those bronzy colours but to incorporate more depth to them. Try a brown smoky eye or try pairing a natural eye with a dark bold lipstick in a wine colour.

6/11) Start light and build the colour up. A lot of times people want to throw the colour they see in the palette or eyeshadow straight on to the eye lid and try to have the same intensity that they see. However, those colours may not look good with your skin tone. If you start light and build the intensity you will see a good shade of green, for instance, that works for your complexion.

7/11) I love experimenting with colour! If we’re talking about eyes, more often than not I pair my pop of colour with a neutral matte shade and a black eye liner. This combo makes almost any colour instantly wearable and less scary! For instance, if I’m going wild with a bold blue on my lid, I’ll blend it out with a taupe or medium brown shade to tone it down a notch. If I want to create a smokier effect, I’ll add a matte black shadow in the “outer v” areas. As soon as I add my favorite black eye liner, I’m good to go.

8/11) I would say one of the most important things to consider that hasn’t already been mentioned would be to pick one feature to play with colour with, and then go nude/neutral on the others, to avoid potentially looking clownish. So – if you are doing a brighter eye, do a softer cheek and light or nude lip. If it’s a bright lip, softer cheek and browns/grays/tans on the eyes – you get the picture! –

9/11) Try to use one colour per brush, so it won’t end up looking dirty. And use a clean brush for blending.

10/11) I would say, make sure to keep it tight, don’t go crazy outside of the crease, not until you know what you are doing. Also, start with the eye makeup first, so you don’t freak out from the colourful fallout. And don’t think that everything has to match – pink shadow / pink lips / pink dress / pink shoes. Oh and never experiment when you are in a rush to go! The universe will make sure to get you for being too brave.

11/11) My pro tip is to add colour on eye lid. It gives an easy application and a peak of colour. Just over the ball of your eye. Blending into a transition colour. If you’re wanting to be a tad more daring, blending a colour through the crease with a large blending brush will still give you a pop of colour.

In light of recent events regarding the coronavirus (a.k.a., COVID-19), many of you are at home and adjusting to your new routine, which includes social distancing, self-quarantine, and possibly working from home. We’re all looking for distractions or projects to occupy our time and mind, and to pump up our spirits. One great way to do that is to turn your attention to a little beauty self-care.

As Reviewed’s resident beauty expert, I spend a lot of time trying new products, organizing my stash, and looking for new, fun ways I can enhance my routine. To help you do the same, I put together a list of beauty products and projects—many of which don’t require you to spend much, if anything at all—that you can try for yourself. Because even in tough times, it helps to do something that makes you look and feel better.

Create a personalized face mask

If you’ve spent the bulk of your isolation time in the kitchen cheffing up meals or showering your family with baked goods, we’ve got the perfect beauty task for you. There are plenty of recipes for easy DIY facials available online—whether they do what they claim or not, there’s no harm in zoning out with a blend of honey, oats, and avocado on your face. Search for recipes using whatever ingredients you have lying around and you’re bound to find some hits.

Not much for experimentation? You can always buy a sheet mask to hydrate your skin or snag a clay mask to “detoxify” it. The much-loved Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask comes as a powder and requires you to mix it with water or apple cider vinegar before spreading it over your face, so you still get that hands-on experience.

Make a scrub for your face, lips, and body

While you’re in the kitchen making a face mask, why not whip up a scrub, too? The key to this spa-like treatment is creating one that’s gentle, lest you damage your skin. It’s as simple as adding ingredients you have at home, like granulated sugar or coffee grounds, to a liquid or creamy base like oil or avocado. Use the scrub to slough dead skin off of your lips, face, and body in the shower and follow up with a moisturizer to replenish the skin barrier.

Clean your makeup brushes

If you can’t remember the last time you washed your makeup brushes, (spoiler) it’s been too long. First off, the bristles hold onto your foundation or eyeshadow and potentially affect the look you’re going for when you use them, but also they can collect bacteria, which you’re then transferring to your face every time you use them.

Use a bar of gentle soap, like the Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented Beauty Bar Soap, and run the brushes over it under water—you’ll see the makeup’s pigment run off onto the soap bar. When it runs clean, that’s how you know you’re done sudsing. Some people also use their facial cleanser to clean brushes in a pinch, and there are tons of hacks for makeup brush cleansers on the internet using household ingredients. To help the process along, you can use your cleanser of choice to coat the brushes and rub them against a cleansing mat, like the popular Sigma one, that has grooves that create friction to break up the makeup in the brush. You can also find a mitt at Ulta that works similarly and is handheld and less expensive.

No matter your method, you’ll want to thoroughly rinse out your cleanser then lay your brushes flat or maneuver them to hang upside down so that the water doesn’t run toward the barrel, causing water to get trapped at the base of the bristles or warp the handle.

Oil train your hair

Did you know that you can “train” your hair to become less oily? The more you wash your hair and remove the oil from it, the more your scalp produces oil to overcompensate for the loss, just like your facial skin. If you’re shampooing every day yet notice scalp greasiness before your next shower, you’re among the many people who over-wash their hair, especially if you also notice that your ends feel dry and overstyled at the same time. There’s no better time than right now when you don’t have to go out in public, to get yourself down to the one to two washes per week recommended for healthy hair from root to tip.

Not sure where to start? Boston-based hair stylist Graziella Meola told us to gradually space out your washes over a couple of weeks—from every day to every other day, to every third day—and substitute with dry shampoo on the off days, or by rinsing with water and putting conditioner on the ends of your hair if you simply must “wash” your hair every day.

Deep condition your hair

Many people have (unofficially) reported to me that their hair is feeling dry and snarly from throwing it up in buns everyday in lieu of their usual styling routines. In some cases, it’s also a matter of unfortunate timing with now having to postpone a long-needed haircut. A hair mask can’t repair your dead ends, but it can give your hair a needed boost of hydration. If you’re looking to invest in one, try the fan-favorite Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask, which claims to replenish moisture and protect against future damage. If you want to save some cash, you can make your own using ingredient combinations like eggs and mayonnaise, banana and avocado, or yogurt and honey, according to blog recipes.

Declutter your makeup collection

You may be taking inventory of any non-necessities cluttering up your space. Unlike clothes, books, or other home purging projects you may consider tackling, makeup doesn’t take up too much space, so it may not be top of mind when you’re sifting through belongings. If you sit down at your vanity, though, you’ll likely find at least one product you haven’t touched in awhile, or ones that are expired.

Most cosmetics have a small graphic depicting an open jar on the packaging with a number inside that indicates its shelf life in months. Go through your collection and toss anything that sits unused or you’re certain you bought longer ago than this suggested expiration. If you have unopened products that you don’t see yourself using, consider donating them to an organization like Project Beauty Share, which gives products to non-profit organizations “serving women and families overcoming abuse, addiction, homelessness and poverty to help restore hope and dignity in their lives.”

Try self-tanning

You’re likely not having many face-to-face interactions these days and for those that happen over a video chat, your virtual appearance does not need to be top-notch. But if you’re someone who feels their best with the glow of a tan, don’t let the current news cycle discourage you from it. Or if you’re someone who wants to finally try self-tanning but you’ve always been afraid of it, now is the time to experiment.

Give yourself a manicure or pedicure

You don’t have to be a professional nail technician to groom your fingers and toes—just some basic tools that you may already have at home, like a nail file and clippers. To keep it simple, clip the tips of your nails and file down any sharp edges to avoid snags in your clothes or scratches on your skin. Then, if you have one, paint a clear coat on your nails to make them look shiny and healthy. Repeat this process on your toes.

If you want to try your hand at a spa-like nail treatment, place your fingertips in a warm bowl of water to soften the skin, then clean up your cuticles using a cuticle pusher. From there, trim your tips with a clipper, shape the edges with a file, and buff out the tops of the nails with a nail buffer or an old, worn-down file that’s not too rough. Once you’ve completed these steps, wash your hands and proceed with a clear coat or a colorful polish that flashes your work. For your feet, you can do the same process but use a foot spa—or, in a pinch, a bucket filled with warm water—to prep your feet.

Standing tall, feeling confident, believing in yourself — these are all important ways to feel your best.

But as any woman who’s ever stood in front of a mirror can tell you, beauty secrets count too!

While the way we look may be only one part of who we are, it is still a part of us. And feeling that you look your best can be a real confidence booster.

Looking your best doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive, either. Experts say most of us really only need to pay attention to a few basic beauty secrets – essentials that can help you look and feel great without spending a lot of time or money.

To help you find the beauty tips that really work, WebMD talked to top skin care and beauty experts, who parted with their personal tips for looking great:

Beauty Tip 1: Never Underestimate the Power of Moisturizer

Whether your skin is dry, normal, or even oily, if you can only afford one skin care product, experts say, your dollars will be well spent on a good moisturizer.

“Sometimes, all you really need is a good moisturizer and a mild cleanser, and you can take years off your face,” says New York University professor Rhoda Narins, MD, president of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. When skin is dry, says Narins, every wrinkle is accentuated, making you look older. If you’re in your 20s or 30s, doctors say, moisturizers will give you some of the protection you need to keep skin from prematurely aging.

“In your 20s and early 30s, a good moisturizer can take the place of a lot of products,” says Park Avenue plastic surgeon Darrick Antell, MD.So what exactly is a “good” moisturizer? Dermatologist Charles E. Crutchfield III, MD, describes it this way: “It’s a product that will do anything from gently adding moisture, to sealing in the moisture you’ve achieved, to helping your skin produce more moisture — and which type you choose should be based on your skin’s individual needs.”

If skin is normal to dry, look for moisturizers containing alpha hydroxy acids. They can help skin produce more moisture on its own, says Crutchfield, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

If skin is very dry, he also suggests products using a technology called vesicular emulsion.“This technology uses microscopic spheres that are alternating layers of moisture and water that slowly release throughout the day, so you get continual moisturization,” says Crutchfield.

If skin is oily, look for a light, gentle moisturizer – but don’t skip this step, cautions Crutchfield.

“Oil is not moisture, and even if you have excess oil you still need moisture,” he says.

Beauty Tip 2: Sunscreen Is Your Best Antiaging Product.

Before you see the plastic surgeon, before you plunk down half a paycheck on that pricey anti-aging cream, in fact, before you do anything, put on sunscreen.

While most of us know it reduces the risk of skin cancer, did you also know it’s an amazing beauty secret that can help keep skin looking young?

The reason, say experts, is that when sunscreen blocks out the sun’s damaging rays, it also blocks their aging effects.

“The sun impacts collagen production in the skin, and without collagen, skin won’t naturally maintain that plump, moist, youthful, wrinkle-free look,” says Antell. Get enough sun exposure, he says, and skin will wrinkle long before its time.

Without the protection of sunscreen, just a few minutes of daily sun exposure over the years can cause noticeable changes in how skin looks and feels, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Not only will you see more wrinkles and fine lines, but also more freckles, age spots, and spider veins. Skin itself can look rough and leathery or loose and slack – all thanks to the sun.

Sunscreen can protect your skin from these damaging rays, so that even if you do spend time outdoors, your face is less likely to give away your age.Crutchfield advises choosing a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Because sun breaks down its effectiveness over time, if you’re going to be in direct sunlight for an extended period, reapply every hour or two.

Another option: Use your regular sunscreen before putting on makeup (it should go on first, before anything). Then, for touch-ups, use a light, translucent mineral powder to add extra protection throughout the day.

“These powders contain a natural sunscreen, and since they generally don’t build up on the skin you can keep adding protection all day long,” says Crutchfield.

Beauty Tip 3: Choose Your Cleanser Wisely

If you’re a “soap and water” girl (or guy), you may want to rethink your cleansing strategy. Dermatologists say that one of the best beauty tips around is to use the gentlest cleanser you can find – and use it sparingly.

“While the temptation may be great to wash your face several times a day (or more if skin is oily), not only will over-cleansing not help you, if you’re using a harsh product — particularly soap — you could be harming your skin,” says Crutchfield.Wash your face too often – more than twice a day – and you can damage the natural lipid barrier, the protective mantle of lubrication that keeps skin looking and feeling healthy.

“Once that protection is lost, and the integrity of the skin barrier disrupted, skin becomes dry – which means it can crack, peel, itch, burn, sting, or any combination,” says Crutchfield. It also means you can look older than your years.

The solution: Wash skin no more than twice a day and choose your cleanser wisely.

Beauty Tip 4: Use the Right Tools for the Right Job

You can have the best eyeshadow money can buy, the world’s most luxurious foundation, a bronzer straight from the cosmetic bag of a supermodel. But if you don’t have the right tools to apply them, their benefits will be lost.

What constitutes the “right” tools? Brushes should be soft and feel gentle on the skin, but also have substance so the product can be moved to the surface of your skin. If you dip a brush in shadow or blush and the color falls off before you make it to your face, that’s a bad brush, experts say.

Beauty Tip 5: Update Hair and Makeup Every 2 Years

If you walk into your high school reunion and hear a chorus of “You haven’t changed a bit,” run, run, RUN to the nearest beauty salon!

Experts say that if you can’t even remember the last time you changed your hair and makeup, it’s way overdue.

“Ideally, your image, including hair and makeup, should be updated at least every two years – and sooner if the styles change dramatically,” says Beverly Hills hair expert and QVC personality Nick Chavez.

By keeping your look current, says Chavez, you also look younger and more modern. “Nothing dates a woman more than outdated hair and makeup,” says Chavez. If it’s been a while since you’ve had a change, visit the makeup counters at your favorite department or beauty store, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most of the better lines are sold by makeup artists who can quickly catch you up on what’s new.
