Living in the tropics can be really taxing because we have to go that extra mile to make sure our skin is healthy. Lips being exposed to the environment at all times are the first to get affected.

Dry summers are especially challenging because they’re topped by not just with scorching sunlight, but dry air can leave the lips brutally chapped. Even something as small as sore lips can cause significant discomfort with the possibility of affecting your entire day and mood. Here are some easy hacks that will help you keep your lips soft and supple all day, every day.

Moisturise Your Lips

Using a good lip balm is where you can start. There are a lot of benefits of using lip balm. Moreover, they’re small and handy and can be applied as many times a day as you like. A good fruit lip balm can work wonders in the summer. Remember to use it right after you shower to lock in the moisture, before you sleep, and throughout the day. Strawberries are particularly great for skin as they’re rich in Vitamin C.

Wear A Moisturising Lipstick

Avoid lipsticks with paraben. If possible, opt for an organic one made with natural ingredients. If that’s not your thing, settle for one with moisturising elements. Glossy or creamy ones are always better than matte because they can lubricate the skin. Always, always remember to use a fruit lip balm or natural lip balm before applying your lipstick, this will help retain the moisture in your lips and won’t let the lipstick dry your skin out.

Don’t Lick Your Lips

Yes, it might sound like using your saliva to wet your lips will moisturise them, but it won’t. It will actually make it worse and dry your lips out even more. Instead, every time you feel like licking your lips, remember to use a flavoured lip balm enough times until it becomes second nature.

Scrub With A Toothbrush

Yep, we’re not kidding! Just like the skin on the rest of your body, your lips also have a layer of dead skin. Gently scrub with your toothbrush, so the bristles act as exfoliators. This will help get rid of the flakiness leaving your lips soft and supple. When you scrub your body, you apply a hydrating moisturiser to protect it from being exposed to the environment. Similarly, a strawberry flavoured lip balm after scrubbing will help keep your lips soft and healthy. Pouting for selfies with your BFFs is going to be a cakewalk!

D-I-Y Lip Mask

If you don’t know how to choose lip balm, the easiest way to make one is by mixing one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply well on the lips and leave for 20 minutes. After which you should rinse thoroughly so as not to leave behind any stickiness. Do this first thing in the morning to have fabulous lips all day long.

Drink Water

Water is an underrated asset when it comes to skincare. Drink plenty of water every day to build your immune system and keep your lips from getting chapped. Very soon you’ll notice a visible change, and you won’t need products as often, though it’s always good to keep a lip balm handy.

Now that you have all the hacks handy, what are you waiting for? Go get those perfect pouty lips all you want!

Makeup can sometimes be a little intimidating, especially when you are trying new things. Let’s face it, the risk is real.

Buying new products you may or may not like, wondering what other people will think of your new look, etc. One of the biggest questions in makeup is colour! Specifically, graduating from a more nude, conservative look — to a more bold, bright and colourful look. You don’t have to take a leap of faith though! We asked some of our professional clients for some tips on experimenting with colour.

Tips For Experimenting With Colours

1/11) For bright lips, try a bright gloss instead of a bright opaque coloured lip stick. For people not used to colour on the lips, gloss is usually a little less intimidating. For eyes, try a simple wash of one colour over the lids rather than trying to incorporate multiple colours.

2/11) Lipsticks are a great way to experiment with colour. They add a small pop to a natural look without committing to a full day’s wear. If you need to change it, just blot it off. Bright eyeliners are also a great pop. Super small and noncommittal. It won’t overtake your entire look or make you look clownish.

3/11) If you’re new to using colour in your makeup, start with colours you already lean towards in your wardrobe. Jewel tones are also a great way to transition from neutrals adding a subtle, sexy and colourful edge to your makeup.

4/11) Experimenting with colour need not be intimidating. Find clever ways to incorporate fall shade trends to your makeup. My clients love when I add a smudge of liner to lower lashes or a wash of eyeshadow to the tear duct in an on-trend shade. Most women love to be on trend without being over the top. If lipstick is more your thing why not try a new colour but stick to your favorite finish? It’s adding something new without changing up the game completely. Since most makeup retailers offer makeup applications with purchase, stop in and try before you buy. That takes the fear out of cosmetics all together.

5/11) First and foremost it’s makeup, if you don’t like how it looks you can always take it off! Fall is a great transition season to still use those bronzy colours but to incorporate more depth to them. Try a brown smoky eye or try pairing a natural eye with a dark bold lipstick in a wine colour.

6/11) Start light and build the colour up. A lot of times people want to throw the colour they see in the palette or eyeshadow straight on to the eye lid and try to have the same intensity that they see. However, those colours may not look good with your skin tone. If you start light and build the intensity you will see a good shade of green, for instance, that works for your complexion.

7/11) I love experimenting with colour! If we’re talking about eyes, more often than not I pair my pop of colour with a neutral matte shade and a black eye liner. This combo makes almost any colour instantly wearable and less scary! For instance, if I’m going wild with a bold blue on my lid, I’ll blend it out with a taupe or medium brown shade to tone it down a notch. If I want to create a smokier effect, I’ll add a matte black shadow in the “outer v” areas. As soon as I add my favorite black eye liner, I’m good to go.

8/11) I would say one of the most important things to consider that hasn’t already been mentioned would be to pick one feature to play with colour with, and then go nude/neutral on the others, to avoid potentially looking clownish. So – if you are doing a brighter eye, do a softer cheek and light or nude lip. If it’s a bright lip, softer cheek and browns/grays/tans on the eyes – you get the picture! –

9/11) Try to use one colour per brush, so it won’t end up looking dirty. And use a clean brush for blending.

10/11) I would say, make sure to keep it tight, don’t go crazy outside of the crease, not until you know what you are doing. Also, start with the eye makeup first, so you don’t freak out from the colourful fallout. And don’t think that everything has to match – pink shadow / pink lips / pink dress / pink shoes. Oh and never experiment when you are in a rush to go! The universe will make sure to get you for being too brave.

11/11) My pro tip is to add colour on eye lid. It gives an easy application and a peak of colour. Just over the ball of your eye. Blending into a transition colour. If you’re wanting to be a tad more daring, blending a colour through the crease with a large blending brush will still give you a pop of colour.

Times are changing and so are a lot of things. We are in the day and era where beauty has become more inclusive and open to all. With this, there are also many out there who love to apply makeup.

The trend has changed now. Men applying makeup is a piece of common knowledge. When done right, makeup can help enhance your features. It can help in bringing out the best of your facial features. We are not just talking about foundation, liner and all, but a basic and simple application that every man can follow.

Here are some pointers for nailing the natural makeup. You can take cues from these to ace the look:

Trim the facial hair

To trim brows, moustache and beard, use a small pair of scissors and a nose or ear trimmer. A man with unruly facial hair might easily appear untidy.

Face cleaning

This means not your regular soap and a quick wash with it, but the use of face scrub. The exfoliation routine is necessary. Gently massaging the scrub on your face will help in removing dead skin and open your pores.

Apply moisturizer

Avoiding moisturizer will result in dry skin. Your face needs cream to stay refreshed and hydrated. It will also help the makeup last longer.

Next up is concealer

Apply concealer to cover up any facial blemishes and dark undereye bags. Select a colour that fits your skin tone.

Choose the right foundation

It is very important that you choose the right foundation, otherwise, your face will look brighter than it should. Use a sponge to apply an even tone. Take the time to spread it properly and for it to blend into your skin.

Use ace powder

This is the next step in your makeup routine. Use a pressed powder brush for your face. Do not forget the forehead and nose areas, as they are the oiliest parts.

Something for the lips

In case you are going for a simple and natural everyday look, then a light lip balm would be perfect. Apply a generous layer to avoid dryness.

Struggling after a lousy night’s sleep? Maybe you have little children who don’t sleep through the night, or you lost track of time binge-watching Netflix. Whatever the reason, your skin will be struggling. Puffy eyes, anyone?

This is because your body does most of its repairing at night. In fact, between around 10pm to 2am is when the magic happens.

Why does my face look dull and tired?

Another reason for losing our glow when we haven’t slept well is because a lack of sleep is stressful to your body.

Yong-Li Zhou, the founder of luxury stem cell skincare brand, Enbacci, says when you don’t sleep, your skin becomes dehydrated.

“This results from high cortisol (stress hormone) levels that impact effective collagen production, which is important for maintaining effective skin barrier function.”

So how can we combat tired, stressed skin?

Drink water and get moving

It sounds obvious, but drinking a few glasses in the morning will help combat dehydration. And if you can muster up the energy, exercise is a great way to get your circulation going and possibly bring back a little glow.

But if exercise is off the cards, there are some other things you can do to help you look less tired quickly.

How to de-puff your eyes

Puffy eyes are a big giveaway regarding how much sleep you have (or haven’t) had.

While techniques work for different people, Yong- Li says, “Blood vessels dilate from a lack of sleep, so what we are trying to do is look for ways to constrict those dilated vessels.”

And an excellent way to do that is with something cold. If you’re game enough, you can try splashing cold water on your face or placing cold spoons on your eyes.

However, Yong-Li says some people’s skin requires a little extra help.

“This is where massaging around the eyes can help to reduce puffiness,” she says. “The 24K Rose Quartz Roller we have is a great way to massage around the face and gently roll around the eye area.”

What about tea bags?

Leelah Linke, a certified Dermal Clinician and co-founder of St Skin, says tea bags work because they contain caffeine.

“The trick to tea bags is that the caffeine acts as a vasoconstrictor which visibly reduces the appearance of blood vessels and dark circles.”

If you’re after a product, Skin expert Lauren Lee, host of the Korean Beauty Show podcast, says placing hydrogels under your eyes “can make you feel better, and they can help brighten dark circles and hydrate the skin.

How to de-puff your face

Again, cold water is excellent for increasing circulation to your face and reducing puffy skin.

Otherwise, Lauren’s go-to is a Korean facial massage to drain the lymph nodes. She explains how to do that here.

What skincare ingredients help tired-looking skin?

Yong-Li says to hydrate skin, “you are looking for humectants in your ingredients list or ingredients with deep moisturising and skin conditioning properties.”

“Examples of humectants include glycerine, panthenol, sodium hyaluronate (or hyaluronic acid) and aloe vera.

“Other moisturising or skin conditioning ingredients include sunflower oil, macadamia oil and shea butter (think fruit and plant oils and butters).”

Fake it with makeup

If all else fails, there’s always makeup to help hide dark circles under your eyes.

Lauren says, “A good concealer can help. Korean beauty brand Skinfood makes a cult favourite dark circle eye concealer with Norwegian salmon oil to boost skin immunity. It also assists in concealing dark spots, under eye marks and fine lines.”

Cindy Cindy Luken, the founder of natural cosmetics brand Lük Beautifood, says a liquid highlight or luminiser can help give the illusion of fresh skin.

“Apply to the high points of the face, including the inner eye area, to help skin appear more awake and refreshed.

“If you have a long day ahead, consider carrying a hydrating facial mist with you and spritzing the skin throughout the day to replenish depleted moisture.”

However, the pandemic showed that the beauty industry is resilient, and “beauty” isn’t going anywhere.

From facemasks to lockdowns and social distancing, many people had fewer reasons to continue with their makeup routine. But that has changed in the post-pandemic era. Now, there’s a boom in the beauty industry, with many spending more on self-care and make-up products.

How did the pandemic influence the beauty industry, and what are the 2022 makeup trends? This article discusses that and more.

How has the pandemic reshaped the global makeup industry?

The beauty industry relies heavily on events and cultural shifts. One could say the pandemic triggered a cultural change in the beauty industry.

People were covering half of their faces with masks and attending online meetings, so many didn’t see a reason to wear makeup. For this reason, a lot of beauty companies saw a drop in their revenues.1 On the other hand, many people decided to go creative with makeup indoors and on social media, thus giving rise to many trends. Here are some effects of the pandemic on the global makeup industry:

1. Digital shopping continues to be on the rise

One of the most significant effects of the pandemic on the global makeup industry is how it changed the way people shop. Although people bought fewer makeup products, some beauty products and trends fared better than others.

Prior to the pandemic, more than 80% of makeup shopping happened in-store, but the pandemic made it necessary for many brands to set up digital shops. This makes it easy for consumers to continue buying their products, and now that we are in the post-pandemic era, people still prefer to shop online.

2. Eye makeup

There has been a massive influence in the beauty trends with more people into eye makeup. With the need for face masks, sellers of makeup products like lipsticks and foundations saw a decrease in sales. However, people seemed to spend more on a different segment of makeup products: eye makeup!

3. DIY

Another notable trend influenced by the pandemic has to be the DIY trend. Many beauty shops closed up, and consumers had to do things themselves. DIY nails, hair dyes, and skin care treatment are some top beauty routines people do on their own.

15 top makeup trends for 2022

The pandemic shaped the makeup trends last year and this year. For 2022, the top makeup trends are all about switching things up with less and sometimes, more. It’s about winged eyes, clear skin, glitters, and metallics. Here are the top trends for 2022 you shouldn’t miss:

1. Skincare

While this isn’t a makeup trend, skincare is now an important priority for many consumers. A lot of people, both men and women, are buying more skincare products like moisturizers, serums, cleansers, and toners. So it’s no surprise that the skincare market is now to be $163 billion in 2022.2

2. Light bases

With many people now focusing on having smooth and healthy skin, they prefer light bases instead of the usual heavy foundations/concealers. Blending full foundation was the rave in the 2000s, but light bases are the vogue this year.

3. Natural look

Natural makeup is a thing, and it involves wearing very soft undertones so that it appears as though you have no makeup on. This may include wearing light foundation or concealer, faux freckles, ditching a lipstick for a lip gloss, or using soft-toned eyeliner.

Makeup artists now use fewer products to achieve a natural look instead of heavy makeup. Also, going for a natural look is probably the most effortless DIY makeup.

4. Diffused lips

As seen on the Spring 2022 runways, the k-beauty inspired diffused lips are predicted to be a makeup trend this year. Diffused lips involve using lipstick in a lighter way so that it only stains the center of the lip and fades towards the edges. It’s a subtle, natural, and effortless look best achieved by using a brush to apply the lipstick.

5. Shimmery eye shadows

Shimmery eyeshadows make the eyes pop out and beautiful. We will be seeing more of the glittery and shimmery eyeshadows this year, especially in fall. If you are willing to try something new, get some shimmers for bold, glittery eyes.

6. Bolded and underlined eyes

From the TikTok videos to the fashion runways, it’s hard to miss the trend of accentuating your eye shape with graphic liners. This trend is perfect in any color, including brown, green, blue, and of course, everyone’s favorite, black. The problem with underlined eyes is getting it right the first time, but that’s what makeup remover is for!

7. Y2K Glossy lips

Little is more, says the shiny lips for the Spring/Summer 2022 beauty trends! If you could use just one makeup on your face, then you should go for a lip gloss for a glossy shine. Meanwhile, gloss isn’t just for the lips anymore but also for the eyelids.

8. Iridescent eye makeup

From the indications on social media, red carpets, and movies, iridescent eye makeup is a top makeup trend this season. This is especially great for spring, and some makeup artists have termed this trend the “Euphoria” effect. After spending months at home, people are longer satisfied with boring or less. Where eye makeup is concerned, bright eyes and double-winged liners are set to take the center.

9. Skincare makeup hybrid

The newest trend is to use a makeup product with skincare qualities. Skincare ingredients like peptides, vitamins, and SPF are making their way into makeup like eyeliners, foundations, and more. It’s like killing two birds with a stone; you enhance your face and protect your skin.

10. Blush contour effect

Blush is back and with a bang! This year’s trend is about rocking blushed cheeks as a facial contour. Apply the blush to your apple cheeks and underneath to emphasize your bone structure to achieve this look.

11. Bold lips

Bold lips leave a maximum impact on your look. A plum lipstick, brown lipstick, or the famous red lipstick is all you need to rock bold, glamorous lips.

12. A luminous look

This year isn’t just about glossy lips but also shiny, glowing cheeks and eyelids. A shimmer across your cheekbone or eyelid will lift your makeup.

13. Double winged eyeliners

Pop culture sometimes influences makeup trends, and one can say that for the double-winged eyeliners trend. Popular HBO series, Euphoria, had their characters rocking the double-winged liners effortlessly.3 For this reason and others, this beautiful eye makeup is set to become one of 2022’s most trending looks.

14. Fluffy eyebrows

In 2022, there is an emphasis on natural, fluffy eyebrows. This is best achieved by shaping your brows and using brow products to sweep them softly. Another popular trend for the eyebrow is the colored brows like orange and red to achieve a futuristic look.

15. Blues and greens

Vibrant eye makeup is undoubtedly the biggest trend this season, as seen on the spring runways. Meanwhile, wearing a color palette like blue and green on your eyes is a great way to double up your look. Consider creating graphic lines in blue and green hues along your lashes.

The History of Makeup
By Christy Tillery French

In order to understand the constantly changing trends in cosmetics, it is interesting to take a look at the evolution of makeup. Women and men have been wearing cosmetics for centuries, although the styles have certainly undergone some dramatic changes over time. Let’s take a look at how cosmetics evolved.

The earliest historical record of makeup comes from the 1st Dynasty of Egypt (c.3100-2907 BC). Tombs from this era have revealed unguent jars, which in later periods were scented. Unguent was a substance extensively used by men and women to keep their skin hydrated and supple and to avoid wrinkles from the dry heat. The women of Egypt also decorated their eyes by applying dark green color to the under lid and blackening the lashes and the upper lid with kohl, which was made from antimony (a metallic element) or soot. It is believed that the Jews adopted the use of makeup from the Egyptians, since references to the painting of faces appear in the New Testament section of the Bible.

Roman philosopher Plautus (254-184 BC) wrote, “A woman without paint is like food without salt.” Of course, Plautus was a dramatist, which would explain his preference for the look of a “painted woman” at that time.

Romans widely used cosmetics by the middle of the 1st century AD. Kohl was used for darkening eyelashes and eyelids, chalk was used for whitening the complexion, and rouge was worn on the cheek. Depilatories were utilized at that time and pumice was used for cleaning the teeth.

Women wore white lead and chalk on their faces in Greco-Roman society. Persian women used henna dyes to stain their hair and faces with the belief that these dyes enabled them to summon the majesty of the earth.

During the European middle ages, pale skin was a sign of wealth. Sixth century women sought drastic measures to achieve that look by bleeding themselves, although, in contrast, Spanish prostitutes wore pink makeup. Thirteenth century affluent women donned pink lipstick as proof they could afford synthetic makeup.

During the Italian Renaissance, lead pain was used to lighten the face, which was very damaging to the wearer. Aqua Toffana was a popular face powder named for its creator, Signora Toffana. Made from arsenic, Signora Toffana instructed her rich clientele to apply the makeup only when their husbands were around. It’s interesting to note that Tofana was executed some six hundred dead husbands later.

Cosmetics were seen as a health threat in Elizabethan England, although women wore egg whites over their faces for a glazed look.

During the reign of Charles II, heavy makeup began to surface as a means to contradict the pallor from being inside due to illness epidemics.

During the French Restoration in the 18th century, red rouge and lipstick were used to give the impression of a healthy, fun-loving spirit.

Eventually, people in other countries became repulsed by excessive makeup and claimed the “painted” French had something to hide.

During the Regency era, the most important item was rouge, which was used by most everyone. At that time, eyebrows were blackened and hair was dyed.

To prevent a low hairline, a forehead bandage dipped in vinegar in which cats dung had been steeped was worn. Most of the country dwellers’ makeup recipes made use of herbs, flowers, fat, brandy, vegetables, spring water and, of course, crushed strawberries. During this era, white skin signified a life of leisure while skin exposed to the sun indicated a life of outdoor labor. In order to maintain a pale complexion, women wore bonnets, carried parasols, and covered all visible parts of their bodies with whiteners and blemish removers. Unfortunately, more than a few of these remedies were lethal.

The most dangerous beauty aids during this time were white lead and
mercury. They not only eventually ruined the skin but also caused hair loss, stomach problems, the shakes, and could even cause death. Although these dangers became known through the death of courtesan Kitty Fisher, the majority of women continued to use these deadly whiteners.

During the 1800’s, women would use belladonna to make their eyes appear more luminous, even though they were aware it was poisonous. Many cosmetics were made by local pharmacists, known as apothecaries in England, and common ingredients included mercury and nitric acid. Hair dye was made from coal tar, which is now illegal in America.

It might interest you to know that men wore makeup until the 1850’s. George IV spent a fortune on cold cream, powders, pastes, and scents. However, not all men wore makeup, as many looked upon a man with rouged cheeks as a dandy.

Here are some beauty-tip recipes utilized during the late 1800’s:
*For freckle removal: bruise and squeeze the juice out of chick-weed, add three times its quantity of soft water, then bathe the skin for five to ten minutes morning and evening.
*As a wash for the complexion: one teaspoon of flour of sulphur and a wine glassful of lime water, well shaken and mixed with half a wine-glass of glycerine and a wine-glass of rose-water.

Rub on the face every night before going to bed.
*To keep hair from turning gray: four ounces of hulls of butternuts were infused with a quart of water, to which half an ounce of copperas was added. This was to be applied with a soft brush every two to three days.
*For wrinkle removal: melt one ounce of white wax, add two ounces of juice of lily-bulbs, two ounces of honey, two drams of rose-water, and a drop or two of ottar of roses and use twice a day.

Victorians abhorred makeup and associated its use with prostitutes and actresses (many considered them one and the same). Any visible hint of tampering with one’s natural color would be looked upon with disdain. At that time, a respectable woman would use home-prepared face masks, most of which were based on foods such as oatmeal, honey, and egg yolk. For cleansing, rosewater or scented vinegars were used.

As a beauty regimen, a woman would pluck her eyebrows, massage castor oil into her eyelashes, use rice powder to dust her nose, and buff her nails to a shine. Lipstick was not used, but clear pomade would be applied to add sheen. However some of these products contained a dye to discretely enhance natural lip color. For a healthy look, red beet juice would be rubbed into the cheeks, or the cheeks would be pinched (out of sight, of course). For bright eyes, a drop of lemon juice in each eye would do the trick. When makeup began to resurface, full makeup was still seen as sinful, although natural tones were accepted to give a healthy, pink-cheek look.

The real evolution actually began during the 1910’s. By then, women made their own form of mascara by adding hot beads of wax to the tips of their eyelashes. Some women would use petroleum jelly for this purpose. The first mascara formulated was named after Mabel, the sister of its creator, T. L. Williams, who utilized this method.

This mascara is known today as Maybelline. In 1914, Max Factor introduced his pancake makeup. Vogue featured Turkish women using henna to outline their eyes, and the movie industry immediately took interest. This technique made the eyes look larger, and the word “vamp” became associated with these women, vamp being short for vampire.

During this decade, the first pressed powders were introduced which included a mirror and puff for touchups. Pressed powder blush followed soon after. The lipstick metal case, invented by Maurice Levy, became popular. Also, during this time, lipstick was tattooed onto the lips by George Burchett, who was also known as the “Beauty Doctor”. This method did not always work, and you can imagine the terrible consequences.

The earliest version of an acid peel was utilized at this time, which was a combination of acid and electric currents applied to the skin. Also, a needle would be used to insert paraffin to the eye area and cheeks, although this, too, was not very successful.

Nivea cream made its appearance in Germany, and companies, in order to compete, began creating creams consisting of Vaseline mixed with fragrance.

To help with sagging jowls and double-chins, women could purchase for wear a weird-looking contraption with chin straps, which obviously did not work.

However, the Victorian look remained in fashion until mass makeup marketing came about during the 1920’s. The newly emancipated woman of America began to display her independence by free use of red lipstick, which was often scented with cherry. By the late ’20’s, visible makeup was considered a must by rural women but was still frowned upon by the country girls. During this decade, lip gloss was introduced by Max Factor. New shades of red lipstick were developed, although were soap-based and very drying. The first eyelash curler came on the scene, called Kurlash. Even though it was expensive and difficult to use, this did not detract from its popularity. Mascara in cake and cream form was extremely vogue.

From the 1930’s through the 1950’s, various movie stars proved to be the models for current trends in makeup. Remember Audrey Hepburn’s deeply outlined cat eyes? With the ’60’s and the hippies came a more liberated makeup look, from white lips and Egyptian-lined eyes to painted images on faces. Heavily lined eyes continued through the ’70’s and ’80’s with a wide range of eye shadow colors.

Today’s trend seems to have reverted to the more natural look with a blending of styles from the past.

In today’s world, a woman has literally hundreds of cosmetics to choose from, with a wide variety of colors and uses. For a younger look, the options available are as simple as skin hydrators and rejuvenators, advancing to chemical skin peels, the now-popular Botox, collagen injections, and ending with the more-drastic surgical facelift.

It is important to reflect on one’s inner beauty as the real beauty of a woman. Outer beauty will not remain forever, no matter what drastic measures are taken. We have all heard the saying, “The eyes are the windows to the soul”. Look into your own orbits, take stock of the woman inside, and be happy with who you are.

This will reflect on your outlook on life, which will send a message to others, and will be returned to you through their reactions to the beautiful you.

Consumer education is more important than ever

The thirst for knowledge is going to be ramped up as consumers look for proof before purchase, researching things like product effectiveness and natural ingredients. Recent Mintel research found that nearly a third of UK facial skincare users research the ingredients used in skincare products to find out how effective a product is.

Information at the point of purchase is more important than ever before as people have low attention spans and want information instantly – beauty brands will need to find creative ways to give consumers information on demand while shopping, especially in stores where on-shelf and on-pack space is limited.

Custom Beauty – Make it for me

Consumers are increasingly rejecting one-size-fits-all, and want products created especially for them: over a third of UK facial skincare users are interested in using skincare formulas that are personalised to their needs.

Personalised beauty products and packaging, customisable formulas and DIY beauty kits are going to have appeal as consumers seek to treat their specific beauty needs. Beauty by life stage is also going to gain traction as people want solutions better targeted to them, and we’ve already seen mass-market players tap into menopausal beauty.

Beauty with a cause

Consumers are buying with a conscience, and beauty brands will need to be transparent about their ethical practices as well as their opinions on topical issues.

Sustainability claims in beauty products have become mainstream and still remain at the top of the agenda for consumers, but they’re also looking at brands’ commitments to things like diversity and equity, as well as ethical supply chain practices.

We all know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone sees it differently.

But when it comes to the most popular beauty trends, each country has its own style. There are so many ways to interpret beauty. Things we find attractive or interesting may be completely opposite across the world. Whether beauty trends are inspired by culture, tradition, or society, it is amazing to see how women worldwide seem to find confidence in their beauty routines.

Some go for full glam while others focus on their hair or brows. The standard of beauty can be so distinct, yet it all comes back to the power that beauty has. It enhances our self-esteem and lets us define beauty for ourselves. So what are the most popular beauty trends around the world?

Japan

In Japan, a look described as “doll face” is wildly popular. This makeup look helps the face appear more youthful and round. Applying blush directly beneath the eyes gives women the rosy cheeks that children tend to have naturally. Also, applying mascara and even false eyelashes to widen the eyes adds a bit of child-like curiosity to the look. Colored contacts are also often used to enhance the eyes as well.

South Africa

It seems anti-aging is an international trend that all women are reaching for. Specifically in South Africa, drinking certain teas is a common way to reveal younger-looking skin. From plumpness to preventing wrinkles, women rely on the ingredients in tea to achieve results more so than expensive creams, as we often do in the US. This might be something to consider for yourself. Have you seen the women from South Africa? They radiate a healthy and youthful glow.

India

In India, long and glossy hair seems to be the focus. Although makeup is growing more popular every day, it appears beautiful and luscious locks are still the go-to. Most women use oils to help their hair remain healthy and retain shine. And as many Indian women naturally have thick and strong hair, women from western regions tend to covet this look.

Arabic

Arab society has an overwhelmingly large population of Muslim women. In many cases, this means women cover most of their faces. So the focus of beauty here is the eyes. Using black kohl liner seems to be the standard to draw attention to the eyes, but more recently, winged eyeliner and newer trends are surfacing to truly let the eyes speak for themselves.

Korea

Korea is a beauty hub for the rest of the world, especially when it comes to skincare. The US beauty market has been long inspired by the K beauty sensations like BB and CC creams and even cushion makeup. Flushed and glowy skin is all the rage in Korea, and the primary way to attain this look seems to be intense hydration. From face masks to creams and lightweight, dewy foundations, skincare is the focus in Korea.

United Kingdom

You may already know that full brows are a go-to in the UK. And it is not just fullness, but a natural and almost bushy look that is popular in London. Dubai follows a similar trend, but along with bold brows, they tend to be more straight and flat when it comes to shaping. The UK seems to reach for a higher arch when shaping the brows. But either way, steering clear of tweezers altogether is a must-have.

Latin American

A favored beauty trend in Latin America is using colored liner on the lower lash line, AKA reverse eyeliner. These shades tend to be quite bold, like neon green or electric blue. Even bright yellows, oranges, and pinks are becoming the norm. This look also seems to be gaining quite a bit of traction in Hollywood as of late.

France

Finally, there is France which tends to admire a more natural look. There is a low maintenance quality to France’s idea of beauty. Air-dried hair, light makeup, and using fewer products appear to be the routine. And to add a touch of chicness to a makeup look, an orangey-red lipstick seems to be the perfect pop of color and flare. Otherwise, the model-off-duty look is wildly popular every day.
